Richard L. Binns, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Binns was graduated summa cum laude from Bridgewater College and then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. As a resident in general surgery at UVA, Richard received the Warren Resident Teaching Award, and went on to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where he completed a 2-year vascular surgery fellowship involving both basic vascular research and patient care of complex vascular disease. During the fellowship he was given the President's Award for his research topic from the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, and presented this work before a large audience of nationally known experts in the field. Joining SAR in 1989, Dr. Binns is now Chief of Surgery at Johnston-Willis Medical Center, and performs the full range of general and vascular surgery, including endocrine surgery, breast, laparoscopic, and major vascular. Outside the hospital he and his wife Judy enjoy their son and daughter and their many sports and school activities. With 2 children in high school he still finds time for his passion: to be a master woodworker and furniture maker, and recently attended a weeklong chairmaking workshop in Vermont.
 

Martin grew up in Alabama and was graduated from Tulane University, double majoring in biology and chemistry, and remained there for medical school. He trained in general surgery as a resident at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, where he received the Tulane Medical School Teaching Award, and completed a vascular surgical fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He also served as an Assistant Professor of general and vascular surgery at the University of Florida from 1979-1980 and also assistant director of emergency medical services during that same interval. Since 1980 he has held the position of assistant clinical professor of general and vascular surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. Upon moving to Richmond in 1980, Martin practiced general and vascular surgery at HealthSouth Medical Center and served as Chief of Staff there from 1994-1996, in addition to roles such as Chairman of the Credentials Committee. At the McGuire Clinic in Richmond, Martin has been Director of the Vascular Laboratory and a member of the Board of Directors. Since 1981, he has also been active as a reviewer of surgical care and Advisor for Medical Affairs for Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Virginia. When he joined Surgical Associates in 1999, he brought with him outstanding leadership and experience in development of our own Vascular Lab program for carotid artery and peripheral vascular surveillance, and has been an active member of the Development Committee for the Vascular Center of Excellence at JW and CMC. As a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Martin has given over 30 presentations at national and local meetings concerning a diverse range of topics and has published 3 textbook chapters. A leader in endovascular surgery in Richmond, he has been a designated instructor for J and J International Systems in the use of the Palmaz vascular stent and has proctored surgeons in its use across the country. Dr. Evans, with several others of the group, is a founding member of VeinSolutions of Richmond. His newest interests include the use of state of the art sclerotherapy methods, radiofrequency instruments, and lasers in the treatments of various vein maladies. He has also been instrumental in bringing a wide range of new cosmetic therapies to the practice, including cosmetic skin care products, intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments, Botox, and facial fillers to decrease the appearance of aging, and the use of lasers for facial rejuvenation. In his spare time, Martin and his wife Johanna enjoy relaxing near the water and also snow skiing.

Dr. Makhoul joined SAR in the summer of 2000 after serving as Associate Professor and Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia since 1996. He has had a distinguished career in surgery dating back to his medical school at the University of Chicago, a surgical residency at Duke University, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine. During his academic tenure, Ray received 14 grants for his research efforts from national sponsors such as the National Institutes of Health and the US Public Health Service, totalling nearly 900,000 dollars for basic science and clinical investigation. He has presented at countless national meetings and as far away as Japan. He is also the author of over 60 peer-reviewed journal publications, 11 book chapters, an atlas of surgery, and 30 journal abstracts, and has even taken time to serve as a mentor to Virginia high school students at the Governor's School. Ray is interested in the full spectrum of general and vascular surgery, and has initiated development of a venous disorders clinic for SAR, which will provide testing and treatment for varicose veins and venous ulcers.

  

Janet Suddoth is a native of Martinsville, Virginia and attended Medical College of Virginia where she received certification in EEG. Janet accepted a position with Chippenham Hospital as an EEG Technologist. While working in Cardiovascular Services she became interested in vascular and was sent to Mountain View, California for vascular ultrasound training. After acquiring her RVT, Janet was promoted to Lead Vascular Technologist and eventually Director of Cardiovascular Services. In addition, Janet has an Associate degree in Arts & Sciences. She subsequently joined Surgical Associates of Richmond in March 2003. Janet enjoys reading and is involved in her son’s school and sports activities.

 

 
In 1986 Phil received his Bachelor of Science degrees from Central Michigan University in Health Sciences.  Shortly after graduation he went to work at the Heart Institute of Michigan in Kalamazoo.  He developed an interest in vascular diagnostic testing and trained in Mountain View, CA.  Phil moved to Richmond, VA in 1989 to work at St. Mary's Hospital and then started his own mobile diagnostic testing company.  In 1995 he merged with Virginia Physicians' Inc. and worked under the supervision of Dr. Martin Evans.  In 1999 Dr. Evans and Phil joined Surgical Associates of Richmond and continue their friendship and professional abilities.  Phil enjoys time with his 2 kids and is an avid golfer.
